Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) announced on Monday that he was introducing new sanctions for cities and counties that require public employees to be vaccinated, even as cases of COVID-19 increase dramatically in the state.
“I do not support warrants at all ”, said the governor at a press conference.
“If a Florida state government agency imposes a vaccine as a condition of employment, it violates Florida law,” DeSantis said, and the audience applauded. “Yesou will be liable to a fine of $ 5,000 for each single offense.
He noted that this could represent millions of dollars in penalties for local governments.
The governor also made a worker speak at the press conference, who peddled lies about the vaccine and was not corrected.
All COVID-19 vaccines available in the United States – whether from Pfizer, Moderna, or Johnson & Johnson – have been extensively studied and found to be safe and efficient, especially when it comes to prevent hospitalizations and deaths.
Reported COVID-19 Florida cases have exploded These last months. The average number of daily cases across the state rose from around 1,500 in June to more than 15,000 this month.
As the highly contagious delta variant spreads and cases increase across the country, the vast majority of cases, hospitalizations and deaths are among those who are not vaccinated.
