In the video, Pelosi did not mention any elected officials from Florida. But the Florida GOP tweet included Fried and Rep. Charlie Crist (D-Fla.), Who both challenge Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2022, and Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.), Who is running for the Senate against the GOP. Florida Senator Marco Rubio.
“As @GovRonDeSantis works on policies and signs legislation supporting Florida’s Jewish communities, Pelosi calls anti-Semite, @CharlieCrist, a valued leader. Crist, @valdemings and @NikkiFried won’t resist Pelosi who is doing nothing to defend Florida’s Jewish community.
The tweet was quickly turned down because Fried is Jewish and Crist was considered pro-Israel when he was Republican governor of Florida. He also visited Israel three times during his political career. Crist was the only candidate directly referred to as an anti-Semetic in the social media post.
“It was total error, human error,” Florida GOP spokeswoman Alia Faraj-Johnson said in a text message to POLITICO.
She said the tweet was meant to say that Omar was anti-Semitic, not Crist. Crist’s name, she added, was supposed to appear further down in the tweet.
“He picked the wrong name in the wrong place,” she said.
In a separate text message to POLITICO, Florida Republican Party executive director Helen Aguirre Ferré said the tweet was a “typo.”
“It was a typo that was corrected and happy to know Fried is paying attention to us,” she said. “Are Nikki, Charlie and Val going to report Ilhan Omar anytime soon?”
After the GOP deleted the tweet, they quickly replaced it with another calling Omar and linking the trio of statewide Democratic candidates to Omar, which he said was the original intention.
Joshua Karp, a spokesperson for Crist, lambasted the response.
“The typographical response does not hold water and is pathetic,” he said.
Fried à Crist defended after the publication of the tweet, a surprising decision since their primary for Democratic governor begins to heat up.
“@CharlieCrist is not an anti-Semite,” Fried tweeted. “As a Jewish woman, I find this accusation disgusting – it is an outright lie. “
Crist responded by thanking Fried and lambasting “lies and division in our politics.”
“Using Florida’s Jewish community as a campaign issue is despicable,” he added. Florida is a state with one of the largest Jewish populations in the country.
