A Florida firefighter fatally shot a woman sitting in his van, before turning the gun on himself in an apparent murder-suicide on Thursday, police said.
Around 7 a.m., officers attended a home on Lakeview Hills Avenue in Titusville and found Haley Friedel, 24, dead from gunshot wounds inside her blue truck.
Nearby, cops discovered Gregory DePietro, a 32-year-old firefighter with the Seminole County Fire Department, critically injured from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
DePietro was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead three hours later.
According to investigators, DePietro and Friedel knew each other, but they did not reveal the nature of their relationship.
A Facebook page believed to be associated with Friedel said she worked as a registered nurse in the emergency department.
A preliminary investigation found that DePietro arrived at Friedel’s home, parked his car directly behind his, and approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, which had been locked from the inside.
“He then fired several shots into the driver’s side window, hitting Friedel repeatedly, then immediately turned the gun on him and fired,” police said in a Friday news release.
An agency spokesperson told the Post that detectives are still trying to determine the motive for the murder.
The Seminole County FD said DePietro has worked for the agency since October 2018 and is part of a specialty team that handles hazardous materials and technical rescues.
“DePietro was in good standing with the Department during his tenure here,” Seminole County officials said. “This is a tragic and devastating loss for the family of Haley Friedel and the family of Greg DePietro.”
