Floor collapses at house party in Colorado, 3 injured

DENVER (KDVR) — Three people have been taken to hospital after the floor of a house collapsed during a house party in Colorado on Saturday night.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office and South Metro Fire Rescue were first called to Aurora’s home for an unknown medical issue after a 911 caller reported ‘people were dying’ and hung up.

When authorities arrived at the scene, they reported “more than 100 minors” on the street and found “much of the first floor [had] collapsed in the basement,” says South Metro Fire Rescue.

While witnesses reported that five people were trapped in the basement, firefighters were able to determine that there was no one in the rubble.

Three victims were taken to hospital, two with minor injuries and one with serious injuries. All three were found outside the home, according to South Metro Fire Rescue.

Pictures shared by South Metro Fire Rescuebelow show the emergency teams responding to the house.

Officials say a house party broke the floor of the house.

“Video of the incident was posted on social media and shows a large crowd jumping to the first floor when the collapse occurred. Many people fell hard into the basement and [it’s] truly remarkable that no additional deaths or injuries occurred. A building department official confirmed that too many people (about 100-150) were occupying the space and their weight was causing the floor to buckle,” say the firefighters.

The collapse caused a brief natural gas leak that first responders stopped. Technicians have also reinforced the house to prevent further collapse and are helping find temporary accommodation for now displaced residents.
