Flight cancellations pile up ahead of Memorial Day weekend

US airlines have canceled hundreds of flights as a combination of extreme weather and staffing issues disrupted the start of travel over Memorial Day weekend.

More than 1,100 flights both within the United States and to and from the country had been canceled by early Friday evening, according to data tracking service FlightAware. Around 220 were erased on Thursday, while airlines have already canceled nearly 200 over the weekend.
