Finland plans next step in NATO bid as Ukraine mounts counteroffensive near Key Eastern City

KYIV, Ukraine — Finland said on Sunday it would seek parliament’s approval to join NATO as Kyiv forces begin a counteroffensive against the eastern city of Izyum, which Ukrainian officials say was aimed at to disrupt Russian supply lines in the Donbas region.

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto said the government would seek membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization subject to parliamentary approval, which is widely expected, in the coming days.
