FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup

India’s opening match at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup ended in an 8-0 loss to a much stronger USA side. After the match, head coach Thomas Dennerby spoke to the media and discussed his side’s surprise performance. the coach still believes the team still has a lot to offer.

“I know the Indian team can play a little better than that. I felt the girls were too nervous, playing their first World Cup game. We weren’t even trying to pass the ball to each other, but to defend and send the ball.” summed up the coach. The Swedish player believes his team can prove their worth to all of India when they face Morocco in their next game, despite the setback.

“I told the girls that if the sun comes up in India anyway. If you have a sleepless night, we won’t be able to play against Morocco. I will be there tomorrow morning with a smile and I will try to cheer girls,” Dennerby said as he lifted the team’s spirits.

About two of the eight goals conceded were the result of corner kicks. He was quite honest when he said: “I was a little surprised because we usually defend our set pieces well, but obviously that wasn’t the case today.”

Although the coach praised his side’s progress against Sweden a few weeks earlier in Spain, he admitted the United States were of a higher caliber. “I didn’t expect us to concede so many goals. If you look at our game against Sweden, we defended well and created a few chances. But honestly, USA only had a level of advance, at least”, he concluded.
