Fielding, running were non-negotiable for MS Dhoni, reveals R Sridhar

Former India manager R Sridhar recalled an incident during his tenure when MS Dhoni, then India captain, said he could not compromise on the pitch and the run between the wicket. Sridhar, who joined the team in 2014, also believes it has been a “revelation” in Indian cricket.

There is no doubt that Indian players have started working on fitness and athletics more than ever since MS Dhoni supported as an Indian captain. The extra practice has helped them improve on the pitch as well as their urgency when running between the wicket. Former India manager R Sridhar has revealed how it all started among the players.

Speaking to Cricket.com, Sridhar recalled that Dhoni, when he was captain, cleared things up among his teammates. The iconic skipper said there were two non-negotiables at the helm and it was all about playing and running between the wickets. Sridhar, who joined the Indian team in 2014, felt it was a ‘revelation’ in Indian cricket, and the likes of Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri took this forward.

“MS…when he was captain, he ran the fielding. And running between the wicket was a revelation to me. MS said ‘two things that are non-negotiable for me are fielding and running between the wicket’. And it’s something that is always true,” Sridhar told Cricket.com.

“And the kind of emphasis he put on the pitch, Virat drove that forward. Ravi always said the top 11 outfielders would take the park. So that’s the kind of importance that was given to the land.”

When asked if he enjoyed working on field exercises with Indians, Sridhar replied that they all work so hard whenever they come to national camp or on tour abroad. He also mentioned a few names, including Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Siraj who have been superb in training.

“Some of the best field sessions I’ve had are with Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Mohit Sharma was a great outfielder being a fast bowler. And the usual suspects are Kohli, Jadeja and Manish Pandey… you had fun playing with them. The guys like Chahal, Kuldeep and Kedar are the ones who worked very hard on their skills. I really enjoyed working with these guys,” Sridhar concluded.
