Fever star Caitlin Clark breaks WNBA rookie 3-point record in 84-80 win over Sun

Caitlin Clark set another WNBA record Wednesday night in Indianapolis.

The Fever star hit a three-pointer early in Indiana’s game against the Connecticut Sun at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Wednesday, officially breaking a tie with Rhyne Howard and giving Clark the league record for three-pointers made by a rookie. Clark has now made 86 shots from behind the arc this season, which surpassed the 85 Howard made during his rookie campaign in 2022.

Just three minutes into the first quarter, Clark hit a step-back three-pointer over Suns guard DiJonai Carrington to reach the milestone.

Clark scored 19 points in Wednesday’s game, shooting 3 of 12 from three-point range and 7 of 17 from the field. The game came down to the final minute, with the Indiana Fever taking an 82-80 lead over the Suns in the final minutes on a Clark layup. The Fever eventually won 84-80.

On Monday night, Clark made four 3-pointers in the Fever’s 84-79 win over the Atlanta Dream. She also tied the record with a step-back 3-pointer in the fourth quarter of that win at Georgia, which she made against Howard.

Clark entered Wednesday’s game averaging 18 points and 8.2 assists per game, a league-best this season. She’s averaging 2.8 three-pointers per game, which ranks fourth in the WNBA. The former Iowa star also became the fastest player in league history to record 500 points and 200 assists earlier this month, something no rookie had ever done before.

Clark shot nearly 38 percent from behind the arc during her career with the Hawkeyes, where she became the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer for both men and women while leading the program to back-to-back national championships. She averaged a career-high 5.2 three-pointers during her final campaign.

The Fever entered their game against the Sun with a 14-16 record, despite winning five of their last seven games to remain in the playoff race. Their win over the Dream also marked the first time the team has won 14 games in a single season since 2016. The Fever sit seventh in the league standings.
