Fernando Tatis Jr. to undergo wrist surgery after three months out

San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. will undergo surgery after fracturing his wrist in the offseason, general manager AJ Preller told reporters Monday.

The star infielder could miss up to three months.

Injuries have played a big part in Tatis’ 2021 campaign, his third with the Padres. Despite missing long periods of time due to shoulder issues, the All-Star shortstop made an impact while in the lineup and led the league with 42 homers. He finished the year with .282/.364/.611.

Tatis, 23, made headlines during the 99-day lockout imposed by the MLB owner for speaking out against the league’s proposal to use an international draft to select potential players from countries such as his native Dominican Republic.

“The international draft will kill baseball in the Dominican Republic,” Tatis told El Caribe.
