Ferguson sets freshman record in Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia – Nasiah Ferguson set a freshman record in the 400 meters to mark UNCW’s arrivals Friday at the Virginia Track & Field Challenge at Lannigan Field.

Ferguson, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, clocked 55.92 in the women’s 400 meters to break the 14-year-old record of 56.76 set by Alexis Kauffman in 2008. Ferguson finished 23rd In the field.

Ferguson’s time ranks fourth all-time on the school’s 400 m list behind Lauren Donaldson (2008), Shenecia Sessoms (1996) and Nicole Delaine (1993).

On the men’s side, Nickolis Anderson set a season best in the 400m at 48.25, just behind his public relations record set last year at the CAA Championships.

“It was a good day for us,” said Jeff Claves, third-year UNCW head coach. “It’s the most competitive competition we’ve entered this year and we’re hanging onto the best programs in the country.”

The Seahawks, making their eighth appearance this spring, face numerous schools, including Colonial Athletic Association rivals Towson and William & Mary.

UNCW wraps up the game on Saturday, beginning with the field events at noon and the running competition at 12:30 p.m.
