Two-time FedEx Cup champion Rory McIlroy fell eight strokes behind as Si Woo Kim scored a record under 62 to take a share of the lead with JJ Spaun.

South Korean Kim admitted to being “excited” to land a “perfect” shot, having drilled from 167 yards on the 18th par four to cap a strong six-under finish on his final six holes, the first of three events in barrage.

“I was just trying to, like, (see) 10 feet down the left side and it was (a) perfect shot, (he) came out,” he told reporters.

“Yeah, I was excited,” he added.

His co-leader USA, meanwhile, birdied eight at TPC Southwind in Memphis as he said it was “hot in here”.

“I’m hot, figuratively and literally, I guess. It’s hot in here,” Spaun told reporters.

“I think I putt really well and putt really well. I guess I hit 15 out of 18 greens so that’s a pretty good combo. When you hit a lot of greens and you hit well and you hit the fairways, it’s hard to complain about the way I played today.”

Spaun’s compatriot Sahith Theegala was seven under, followed by a group of four including Tony Finau another shot back, while England’s Tyrrell Hatton was five under.

Northern Irishman McIlroy had a par 70, with Scotsman Russell Knox eight strokes off the pace.

World number 1 Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris also struggled to one in 71.

The St Jude is the new first leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The top 125 players in the regular season points standings have qualified (120 are playing), and only the top 70 after this week will qualify for the rematch, the BMW Championship.
