FBI refuses to respond if it participated in the hearing on January 6

A senior Federal Bureau of Investigations official repeatedly declined to answer when questioned by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in a hearing Tuesday whether the federal agency was involved in the riot on Capitol Hill January 6th.

Cruz asked Jill Sanborn, deputy executive director of the FBI’s national security arm, if any FBI agents were involved in the events that unfolded on January 6, which Democrats called an insurgency.

Cruz asked Sanborn, “How many FBI agents or confidential informants were actively involved in the events of January 6?”

She replied, “Sir, I am sure you can understand that I cannot go into details of sources and methods. “

Cruz asked if “FBI agents or confidential informants” actively participated in the events of January 6. “Yes or no?” He asked. Sanborn replied, “Sir, I cannot answer that. “

Sanborn gave a similar response when asked if any FBI agents or confidential informants “get involved.[ed] violent crimes on January 6, ”or whether FBI agents or informants actively encouraged and instigated crimes of violence on that day.

When questioned again, she said she did not know if “federal agents or anyone in the service of federal agents actively promotes violence or criminal behavior.” “Not to my knowledge, sir,” she said to Cruz.

Sanborn’s refusal to confirm – or deny – the FBI’s involvement in the riot that day could reinforce growing suspicions about the agency’s role in inciting violence on Capitol Hill.

Suspicion was particularly focused on one man, Ray Epps. Cruz said Epps was filmed encouraging people on January 5, 2021 to break into the Capitol, prompting some to chant “Fed!” Feed! Feed! “

Cruz said that Epps was also filmed whispering to someone who then began to demolish the barricades around the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Cruz noted that the FBI first requested information about him from the public in a post, but then removed it from posting.

Cruz asked Sanborn: “Who is Ray Epps?

Sanborn said she was “aware of the individual” but did not have “the specific history of him”.

Cruz asked if Epps was a fed.

“Sir, I cannot answer that question,” Sanford said.
She also couldn’t tell if Epps had urged people to tear down the barricades.
