Far-right Geert Wilders announces new deal with Dutch government – POLITICO

The agreement still needs the approval of the parliamentary factions of the four parties. And the choice of a new Prime Minister could also throw a spanner in the works at the last minute.

This announcement crowns almost six months of tense negotiations between the four parties, which at one point saw the departure of the head of the NSC and whose open quarrels on social networks have fascinated Dutch public opinion.

But by making a few concessions, including agreeing not to become prime minister, Wilders – the shock winner of last year’s election – appears to have finally managed to strike a deal.

Wilders’ victory was widely seen as a harbinger of a rise of the far right in next month’s European Parliament elections. Its inclusion as a major force in the new government is expected to pose a challenge to Brussels officials, given its eurosceptic and anti-immigration stances.

“If it works, it can be considered a historic day,” Wilders told Dutch broadcaster NOS on Wednesday morning, ahead of the announcement. “Being the largest party in a government is something you can only dream of as a party leader and it’s good for our voters.”

With the other three party leaders also choosing to stay in parliament rather than become ministers, much is still unknown about who will form the next Dutch government.
