MANILA, Philippines — Chery Tiggo’s Eya Laure and assistant coach Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes have shared the taraflex for a long, long time.

With their stable connection, sentences are generally not necessary. Just body language is enough.

So, during their thrilling five-set win over F2 Logistics in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) at the Philsports Arena on Saturday, Laure communicated with Reyes on the bench without having to say a word.

Like clockwork, the Santo Tomas College product checked Reyes with a touch of abandon as they trailed 2-1 at the hands of the Cargo Movers. The veteran tactician also knew what that look meant.

And he knew this wasn’t the time for her to raise the white flag, despite the inconvenience. He knew Laure’s abilities, because, of course, he knew them.

“There was a set where I saw Coach Kung Fu. I didn’t tell him anything but I checked it like I felt like I wasn’t contributing because even my services had errors,” Laure said in Filipino.

“But I saw hope after seeing that face,” she added jokingly, causing her and Reyes to burst out laughing.

It’s simply the best way they are and have been. Since Laure’s heyday as a high school volleyball sensation, Reyes was already there to name the photographs for her.

It’s like an ideal pairing that delivers big results, like Oreo and milk, peanut butter and jelly, Mr. Miyagi and the Karate Kid, you name it.

As they always have in the UAAP, Reyes and Laure’s connection fueled the Crossovers to the semifinals of the 2023 PVL All-Filipino Convention.

And like his run for the Golden Tigresses in the collegiate league, he never forgets to credit his best coach.

“I always say that without my coach by my side who was with me from the beginning, I would not have my achievements in life… Whoever I am now, how I was shaped, I am happy because and in These new steps, I am nevertheless with him.

“Plus, our confidence level has increased because we now have women like Jen (Nierva).”

Unfortunately for the tandem of Laure and Reyes, they never won gold in the women’s division of UAAP volleyball. It was and can continue to be their “what could have been.”

This is largely due to the fact that they always had to face Nationwide University who were supported by Nierva and Princess Robles.

Now it’s a whole different ball game at the professional level. Something could happen, including sharing the bench with people you consider long-time rivals.

Reyes, who had to endure UST’s defeats as head coach at the hands of the Woman Bulldogs, realized how strong a team can be if you mix rivals.

“It’s easy to win because they are all together now (Laure and NU products). That’s what I always think about… I’m not saying that just because we’re here, we succeed right away. No, that’s not what I meant,” the assistant mentor mentioned.

“Let’s just think of it as espresso. There is stability with this staff. You can have cream or just black coffee, as if that is an ideal combination.

In fact, the collegiate rivals’ unison has paid off for Chery Tiggo as it currently sits in the upper echelon of the league with an 8-1 record.
