‘Extremely venomous’ snake on the loose in Netherlands

An “extremely venomous” green mamba measuring almost two meters long escaped from its owner in the south of the Netherlands, local authorities warned on Tuesday, calling on the population to be extremely careful.

The municipality of Tilburg called on residents of a neighborhood near the station to “be extra careful and not approach the snake”.

If the reptile does not seek confrontation itself, it remains “very dangerous” and “its bites are extremely venomous,” she said in a press release.

“If someone is bitten, it is important that that person receives medical attention immediately,” she adds.

A photo of the green reptile curled up on itself was published on the municipality’s website.

She called on residents, if they spot the snake, to keep their distance, remain calm and call the emergency number immediately. “Don’t try to catch the snake yourself,” she insists.

The snake is mainly active during the day and measures between 6 and 6 feet long, she said.

“Experts indicate that the tropical snake will not come out anytime soon due to the weather (…), it likes dark and warm spaces,” says Tilbourg.

Police received a report Monday evening from the pet’s owner that “a snake” was missing. In the meantime, he “moved his other animals elsewhere,” she says.
