Explosion rocks central Istanbul — RT World News

The explosion occurred in the main pedestrian street of the largest city of Türkiye, several casualties were reported

A deadly explosion occurred on Sunday on Istanbul’s iconic Istiklal Avenue, a busy pedestrian street in the historic heart of the city.

The incident prompted a heavy security response, with police cordoning off the area and several ambulances being reported to the scene. Security forces reportedly evacuated civilians residing in the neighboring block.

Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya confirmed on Twitter that the blast left people dead and injured. Later in the day, Yerlikaya provided an update, saying that according to preliminary information, four people were killed and 38 others injured in the explosion.

Footage circulating online, apparently shot moments after the blast, shows several people lying motionless in the street amid the debris.

The Istanbul Prosecutor General’s Office has opened a terror investigation into the blast, local media reported. Separately, prosecutors have also launched an investigation into “provocative messages” on social networks in connection with the explosion.

The Turkish Broadcasting Authority (RTÜK) has urged the public and the media to trust only official information about the explosion. “We are closely monitoring developments. Please don’t rely on unverified information, let’s get information from reliable sources. Let’s not spread false information without knowing it”, RTÜK said in a statement.

Shortly after the incident, an Istanbul court banned the dissemination of images of the explosion, applying to all news and social media sites.
