Explosion at East Chicago Slag Pit; No injuries reported – NBC Chicago

An explosion occurred in a slag pit in northwest Indiana.

The explosion at Lafarge North America in east Chicago on Sunday afternoon occurred at a contractor’s facility at a plant that turns slag into cement, the (Northwest Indiana) Times reported.

No injuries were reported, said Cleveland-Cliffs Indiana Harbor West spokeswoman Patricia Persico.

The explosion occurred in the raw materials section of the plant along Lake Michigan. Several small fires at the mill had to be extinguished.

Slag is a highly volatile by-product of steelmaking that can explode when mixed with water, according to the newspaper.

Persico said recent rain caused the explosion.
