Expensive jet fuel punishes airlines and passengers

American drivers are feeling the pain of rising gas prices. Airlines and their customers had it even worse.

Jet fuel, a kerosene-based product similar to diesel fuel, has nearly doubled in price since last April in the United States, according to S&P Global Commodity Insights, while gasoline is up about 45%. A drop in Russian diesel exports in recent weeks has caused Western refiners to shift resources from jet production to diesel production, leaving jet fuel undersupplied, analysts at S&P Global Commodity Insights said.
