A retired Baltimore police officer has been charged with more than a dozen child sex abuse charges – after he was shot by his wife for allegedly molesting children at his daycare, police say .
James Weems Jr., 57, was arrested at a hospital on Monday, where he was treated for serious injuries sustained in a July 21 shooting.
Washington DC Metro Police say the ex-cop’s wife, Shanteari Weems, 50, shot and killed her husband of five years last week at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel on Maryland Avenue in the capital.
Detectives responded to the luxury hotel – where overnight stays start at $400 – around 7.40pm for a shooting report, and found James with apparent gunshot wounds.
The husband was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
His wife was arrested after a brief confrontation with police and charged with assault with intent to kill, a felony. She is due to appear in court on Friday.
“The detectives’ investigation revealed that this offense was domestic in nature,” police said.
On Tuesday, the Baltimore County Police Department announced that an arrest warrant had been issued for James, after allegations emerged that the ex-cop sexually abused at least three children while he worked at a daycare center in the Baltimore suburb of Owings Mills. , Maryland.
Records indicate that Shanteari operated the Lil Kidz Kastle daycare center in Owings Mills.
Baltimore County detectives launched an investigation into the husband earlier this month after learning of the alleged abuse, according to a statement from the agency.
James now faces 13 criminal charges, including two counts of third degree sexual offence, three counts of second degree assault and one count of displaying obscene material to a minor.
According to a police affidavit cited by news station WJLA, at the time of her arrest, Shanteari told detectives about her husband, “f–k he’s a child molester.”
In a subsequent interview with police, Shanteari reportedly said he received several messages and calls from parents and teachers at his daycare center reporting child sexual abuse.
The woman said she arrived at the 5-star hotel in DC to confront her husband and repeatedly questioned him about the abuse allegations. The couple then engaged in a “full-fledged” argument, which escalated, she told authorities.
The woman allegedly said that at some point James walked towards her, which was when she pulled out her gun and shot him.
Court documents said cops recovered a notebook from the hotel room containing handwritten messages, including “I will shoot (James) but not kill him” and “I want these kids to get justice, and you will pay”.
Another note read, “My only regret for me is that I didn’t put the bullet in your head.”
Weems, a retired U.S. Marine, served with the Baltimore police between 1996 and 2005. He continued to work for the department as a contractor until 2008, the agency said.
