“Everything is still written in my notebook”, says Sanju Samson on his experience learning from Rahul Dravid

Sanju Samson has revealed how he learned from Rahul Dravid when the latter was the hitting coach of Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) during their time in the franchise. Samson said he asked almost every question he had during this time and wrote down all of Dravid’s answers in a notebook.

Sanju Samson, the Rajasthani Royals (RR) captain, was Gaurav Kapoor’s last guest for his “Breakfast with Champions” chat show. Samson shared many of his thoughts in this interview, but among them his experience under Rahul Dravid playing for Delhi’s daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) was arguably the most notable.

Samson joined the Delhi-based franchise in IPL 2016 and played there for two seasons before returning to Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2018. He totaled 291 points for them in 2016 and then racked up 386 points in the next edition . His biggest gain in two years was that he had the opportunity to learn under Dravid, who was their batting coach during that time. Notably, Samson caught Dravid’s eye before joining the Daredevils as India’s current head coach was RR’s head coach during his trial in 2013.

“We all had that kind of experience with Rahul Dravid, to learn from him,” Samson told Gaurav Kapoor on ‘Breakfast with Champions’. “These 3-4 years that I spent with him, I feel like I asked him for almost everything. Everything is still written in my notebook. After talking to him, I went back to my room and quickly jotted down what he said.

Speaking about his tries at RR in 2013, Samson revealed he had the best two days with the bat and admitted he was never able to live up to the standards. Skipper RR also revealed he was greeted by Dravid after nearly every shot he played.

“I beat in the trials for two days, and I’ve never been able to match the standards of those two days in my entire life. I was knocking a knock and a voice was coming from behind (from Dravid), ‘What a Shot. Shot Sanju,’ revealed the goalie hitter.

Under Samson, RR sits third in the IPL 2022 points table, with six wins and four losses. They will next play Punjab Kings (PBKS) on May 7 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
