Everton boss Frank Lampard slams ‘incompetent’ VAR over Rodri’s handball in Manchester City loss

Lampard has torn apart VAR Chris Kavanagh after his Everton side were denied a late penalty against Manchester City, a decision which could have huge implications for the Premier League title race and relegation battle.

City, whose loss to Tottenham last weekend reignited a run that had ended, were leading 1-0 at Goodison Park through Phil Foden when midfielder Rodri appeared to use his arm to control the ball in his own penalty area.

However, on-field referee Paul Tierney did not award a penalty and VAR opted out after a review, leaving Lampard furious.

“There’s no doubt, there’s probably no doubt,” Lampard said of whether his team should have been kicked.

“The decision is unbelievable, unbelievable, and it makes us lose the opportunity to get what we deserved.

“It’s a VAR call. It’s Chris Kavanagh, I’ve spoken to the referee and they know it’s a penalty, the question is it’s offside and it wasn’t This is why we have VAR.

“It wouldn’t have taken more than five seconds to know it was a penalty. He (Kavanagh) should have either told the ref to give it away or told him to go watch it.

City’s victory keeps them six points clear of second-placed Liverpool, who are one game less, with the two sides still set to meet later in the campaign.

For Everton, who are embroiled in a relegation battle just one point outside the relegation zone, the outcome could prove even more significant.

“We lost a point because of a professional who cannot do his job properly,” Lampard continued.

“You start looking for whys and I can’t think why. He’s so incompetent to be wrong.

“Dynamism [Guardiola] will know, Everton fans will know, Man City fans will know, that was the clearest penalty you could give: arm out – great, under sleeve – great, I was waiting for the penalty.

“Incompetence at best, at worst who knows?

“I’ll wait for the statement or apology they make when things go wrong, but that won’t mean anything.”
