Everton 0-1 Chelsea: Jorginho’s penalty is enough to give Thomas Tuchel’s side an unconvincing victory

helsea started their Premier League campaign successfully at Everton, albeit in rather unconvincing fashion.

The feeling at the club last season was that injuries to Ben Chilwell and Reece James towards the end of the year were a major reason why Tuchel saw his title challenge fall apart. At their worst in the ensuing period, Chelsea too often seemed on pace, just as they did for much of the first half on Merseyside.

Anthony Gordon, meanwhile, may have lacked the end product, but showed some of Chelsea’s biggest names, constantly probing Tuchel’s backline, although this one was perfectly organized by Thiago Silva and the colossal debutant. Kalidou Koulibaly.

It was Chilwell who would win the penalty, penetrating into the box and forcing an error from Abdoulaye Doucouré, the Everton midfielder being reckless in his challenge and ending the England international.

Jorginho, who had lost some of his shine in recent months, converted with ease on the stroke of half-time, giving Chelsea a lead they did not fully deserve.

After the break, Lampard’s side came out of the blocks. Gordon and Gray stayed behind, with Silva, Cesar Azpilicueta and Eduoard Mendy all called for last-minute action to keep the scores level.

Evertonian’s challenge would quickly fade as the second half dragged on, however, and Chelsea saw the game come to an end.

Tougher tests are coming soon – especially against Tottenham next week – and Chelsea are desperate to improve.
