Man City begin their Champions League title defense at home this evening against Serbian giants Crvena Zvezda. Pep Guardiola’s side finally achieved European glory after so many years of frustration last season, sealing a famous treble when Rodri’s goal beat Inter Milan in June’s final in Istanbul.
Many believe City will become the first team since Real Madrid in 2017 and 2018 to win back-to-back titles in Europe’s premier club competition, a difficult task but made easier initially by a bland-looking Group G on paper which also includes RB Leipzig and Young Boys. They already look in worrying form after winning five from five to launch their Premier League defence, coming from behind to take West Ham’s unbeaten record on Saturday with Guardiola back in the dugout after back surgery.
City are now expected to comfortably face a Red Star side – famous winners in 1991 – who won the Serbian SuperLiga last season but currently sit in third place after seven matches of the new campaign and have lost two of his last three. Man City team news
Manchester City’s 100% start to the season has certainly not been without major setbacks on the injury front.
Kevin De Bruyne could miss the rest of the calendar year with a hamstring injury, while Pep Guardiola is also without the services of John Stones, Mateo Kovacic and Jack Grealish tonight.
Nathan Ake could return to defense, however, after being substituted late in the 3-1 win at West Ham on Saturday.
