Even the Playdate Simulator can run on Steam Deck

In another reminder of the flexibility of Valve’s Steam Deck portable gaming PC, an enterprising Redditor has had the Playdate Simulator running on his Steam Deck, as shared on Twitter by Lawrence Yang valve designer.

The Playdate, if you’re unfamiliar, is Panic’s tiny yellow handheld with a crank, but similar to the long reservation queue for the Steam Deck, Playdate pre-orders save for months. If you’re placing a Playdate pre-order right now, it shouldn’t ship until 2023. If you already have a Steam Deck and want to play with the old school vibes of Playdate, it looks like it’s possible to do so by installing the free Playdate Simulator.

You can see a video of the simulator running on Steam Deck in u/ncarson9’s Reddit post. They launch the simulator from the Steam Deck menus, navigate to a game, open it, and spend a few seconds moving around a Zelda-like the forest and swinging a small sword.

Like many other things with the Steam Deck, setting up this setup probably requires a bit of tinkering. But it’s fun to see one of 2022’s coveted handhelds running on another of 2022’s coveted handhelds, even in this limited way. Is it portable reception?
