Tenerife to host two European Tour events in three weeks in Canary Islands, with new Tenerife championship replacing canceled French Open

Last updated: 04/14/21 12:38 pm

The European Tour has confirmed that an additional tournament will be played in Tenerife to replace the canceled French Open next month.

The Tenerife Championship will take place May 6-9 and will be the last event of a three-week trip to the Canary Islands, starting with next week’s Gran Canaria Lopesan Open, hosted by Rafa Cabrera Bello.

The Golf Costa Adeje club will then host the Tenerife Open, the same venue being used the following week, as the European Tour opted to stay in the Canary Islands rather than adding another event at the Belfry before the British Masters at the mid-May.

European tour leader Keith Pelley added another event in Tenerife

Golf Costa Adeje hosted the Open de Espana in 2003, when Kenneth Ferrie won the first of his three European Tour titles, while Tenerife last hosted a Tour event two years later, when John Bickerton won a five-stroke victory at the Canarias Open at Abama Golf Club.

“We are very grateful to Golf Costa Adeje and the Municipality of Costa Adeje for their support in creating the Tenerife championship in such a short time frame,” said Keith Pelley, General Manager of the European Tour.

“It was important for us to replace the postponed French Open to provide playing opportunities for our members, while also having a second event in Tenerife, and playing a third consecutive week in the Canary Islands, this also helps reduce travel of our players, caddies and staff.
