Nacho Elvira took a two-stroke lead at the European Tour’s Cazoo Open, as the Spaniard’s younger brother Manuel entered the Italian Challenge.

The overnight co-leader rebounded from an opening hole buggy to win a 67 in the second round and move up to 11 under, bolstering the 34-year-old’s hopes of winning a first European Tour title.

Elvira’s younger brother Manuel was also 11 under after 36 holes on the Challenge Tour, with both siblings briefly leading their respective events at the same time until Frédéric Lacroix took a lead in Italy.

“It’s amazing,” said the older brother, who has only made two of his last 11 cuts. “He’s playing really well. It’s great that we both have 11 cents and lead, it’s interesting – it never had to happen before.

“To be 100% honest, I don’t care where I’m going to end up. I’m happy with the way I’m trying to change my game, especially my mind. So we’ll see what it brings.”

Elvira had mixed six birdies with two bogeys on his second round in Wales to set himself apart from fellow overnight leaders Vincent Norrman, playing only his third professional event, who managed four birdies from his last five holes for score a 69 under two.

Japan’s Masahiro Kawamura scored the lowest round of the day with four shots and rose to third after a score of Under 63, with Englishman Matt Wallace – the highest-ranked player on the pitch – four behind as he tries to make his way to Ryder. Cut dispute.

“I haven’t felt like this in a while, coming to a tournament where expectations are a little higher,” said Wallace, who needs a win this week to secure a place at the WGC- FedEx St Jude Invitational next month. “Either way, I have high expectations for myself, but I haven’t felt like this in a while.

“That’s why I’m here. I need a really good result – I don’t think the second is enough to get me into the WGC. That’s my goal for the week and I hope I can make a few fewer mistakes – I’m ‘playing well enough to try this week.’
