Roma took the first leg advantage after fighting back to beat Ajax 2-1 in Amsterdam in the Europa League quarter-finals.
Ajax took a 39th-minute lead thanks to Davy Klaassen, but missed a great opportunity to double their advantage when captain Dusan Tadic saw his 53rd-minute penalty saved by Pau Lopez.
It was a turning point at the Johan Cruyff ArenA as Roma equalized four minutes later on Lorenzo Pellegrini’s free kick before Roger Ibanez – who fouled Tadic to concede the penalty – snatched a stunning winner in the 87th minute .
Villarreal were also celebrating an advantage in the first leg of their trip to Croatia after beating Dinamo Zagreb 1-0.
Gerard Moreno’s half-time penalty was enough to give Unai Emery’s side the lead ahead of their attempt to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2016.
Granada 0-2 Man Utd
The winners of the draw between Roma and Ajax will stage a semi-final with either Granada or Manchester United, which took a big step towards the bottom four with a 2-0 victory at Estadio Los Carmenes.
Marcus Rashford put United in the lead in the 31st minute against Granada in Spain before Bruno Fernandes clinched a 2-0 victory with a late penalty.
Arsenal 1-1 Slavia Prague
The only away side that didn’t win on Thursday night was Slavia Prague, but they still managed to win a 1-1 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal replacement Nicolas Pepe appeared to have taken the Gunners’ victory when he came home four minutes from time but Slavia responded with Tomas Holes header deep in the stoppage time to snatch a draw.
