EU leaders condemn Iran’s revenge attack on Israel – POLITICO

European Council President Charles Michel said EU leaders “strongly condemn” the Iranian attack on Israel. “We must do everything to prevent further regional escalation“, he said in an article on X.

“We must avoid further bloodshed. We will continue to monitor the situation closely with our partners,” added Michel.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, denounced “the blatant and unjustifiable attack on Israel,” in a statement on X. “I call on Iran and its proxies to immediately cease these attacks. »

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called the Iranian attack “a an unprecedented escalation and a serious threat to regional security.

The region was on high alert for possible retaliation by Iran after an Israeli strike killed a senior Iranian officer at an embassy in Syria. American officials considered the threat emanating from Tehran to be real and viable. Biden noted that “the U.S. military has moved ballistic missile defense aircraft and destroyers to the region over the past week” in anticipation of an attack.

Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said some of the missiles fired by Iran landed in Israel, including one that hit and caused minor damage to an IDF base in the south of the country. “Only one little girl was injured,” Hagari said.

The Israeli government has requested an emergency meeting at the UN Security Council. Meanwhile, Iran’s permanent mission to the UN said in a statement statement about that the attack “can be considered over” and that “if the Israeli regime makes another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably harsher.” The United States “must stay away,” the statement said.
