EU launches new Meta investigation into ‘addictive’ algorithms harming children – POLITICO

Meta may not have sufficiently assessed the risks that underage users could access Facebook and Instagram and view inappropriate content, the Commission said. The company also may not have installed effective enough tools to verify the age of users and prevent children from accessing its platforms.

The investigation into Meta’s potentially inadequate protection of minors comes on top of another investigation launched in April to determine whether the company also failed to sufficiently limit the spread of misinformation. The European Commission opened a similar investigation in February into TikTok’s addictive design.

Very large online platforms like Instagram and Facebook must respect strict content moderation rules and limit a number of major societal risks, including negative effects on mental health and on minors.

Investigations can lead to swift sanctions of up to 6 percent of a company’s annual global turnover if the Commission finds it has violated the DSA.

Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
