Ethan Ampadu tipped for ‘really important’ Chelsea future by Spezia manager after loan move

Pezia manager Luca Gotti has revealed that Chelsea see Ethan Ampadu as a key centre-back player in the future.

The Wales international has struggled to cement a regular first-team spot at Stamford Bridge, making just 12 appearances for the club since his debut in 2017.

To help his development, Ampadu embarked on a flurry of loan spells over the next five years, most recently joining Serie A side Spezia after spells at RB Leipzig, Sheffield United and Venezia.

Signed at 15 from Exeter City, the 21-year-old remains an important part of Wales’ international set-up and is set to travel to the Qatar World Cup in November.

Ampadu attracted interest from clubs in England, Germany and Italy before moving to Spezia and played 70 minutes of their loss to Napoli on Saturday.

While Chelsea have a number of central defensive options, all of Thiago Silva, Kalidou Koulibaly and Cesar Azpilicueta are over 30 and offer no long-term guarantees.

After Ampadu’s Serie A debut, Gotti said: “Chelsea are confident that Ethan Ampadu will be a very important player as a centre-back in the future.”
