Essendon great Matthew Lloyd has again urged the club to carry out an external review, saying “now is the time for people to be honest”.
Amid a disastrous start to the season, Bombers president Paul Brasher indicated last week that an internal review would be implemented, but suggested the changes would be “incremental” rather than “transformational.”
However, Lloyd was unhappy with the chairman’s message to fans, urging those at the club to look honestly at themselves and where Essendon stands.

“I just don’t think it was necessary. You should review every week, like they would, but I don’t know why you have to go public to begin with,” Lloyd said of Brasher’s post on Nines. Footy Ranked.
“If they have to do a review, I would call on outsiders, because I think it’s time for everyone at the club to open up honestly.
“If you have inside people doing the review, you’re always worried about it coming back to you. I think a review should be done where outsiders come in and players can open up honestly about what’s going on. they think of the training, what they think of the club.
“I would like to see the fitness staff (under review) because they have a lot of injuries, I would like to see the management of the list (under review), I would like to hear from everyone open up.
“Nobody should say, ‘Yeah, he’s fine because he’s the CEO, we signed him for two years, Adrian Dodoro is fine’. You might as well not have mentioned it.
“If you’re going to do one, I think now is the time for people to be honest. Otherwise, you just make a few changes here or there and really don’t get anywhere.”
Asked by Footy Ranked host Craig Hutchison on whether he would be open to serving on a panel that could conduct an external review, Lloyd said his media commitments would not allow him to do so.

“I’m probably not the right person (to undertake the review) because of my place here and now. I wouldn’t put myself in that position,” Hutchison said.
“I think there are great footballers out there and I just think having an outsider’s opinion, if they do it right, is what they should do.”
