Borussia Dortmund’s early exit from the Champions League will only raise new questions about Erling Haaland’s future at the club.
The Bundesliga team withdrew from the competition after succumbing to a 3-1 loss at Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday night.
The Europa League awaits Haaland and co. but many would agree that a player of the caliber of the Norwegian striker should only be in the Champions League.
There was already a lot of speculation regarding his future, but Dortmund’s latest setback will only add to it, especially with the January transfer window in the not too distant future.
A number of Premier League clubs have been linked with the 21-year-old, and Rio Ferdinand believes Haaland would fit brilliantly into Liverpool’s top three, but a move to Manchester City is more likely.
“If I were Liverpool, I would take it right away”, Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“If he goes to Liverpool, it’s a devastating trio. I don’t think it’s that hard for him to adjust if he goes to Liverpool.
“Jack Grealish went to Manchester City and he’s a top player and we all love him, but it’s been quite difficult to adjust and get into this team.
“But when Liverpool are at their best, they kind of leave a hole in the middle for the tracks to come in. I’m not sure Mohamed Salah would score so many goals if Haaland was in the squad.
“It’s an incredible prospect, but I think Manchester City would be the likely destination.”
Manchester United were closely linked with Haaland before choosing to join Dortmund in January 2020.
However, it is feared that he will never sign for the Red Devils due to his father Alf-Inge’s infamous clash with Roy Keane who crashed into him with a vicious tackle while playing for City.
“I would have thought Manchester City would be the most likely [for Haaland], added Ferdinand.
“I don’t know if there is some bad blood between Haaland, his agent, obviously his father playing against Roy Keane in Manchester [United], I’m not sure that Manchester United’s is suitable.
“Romelu Lukaku has now gone to Chelsea, not sure he would fit in there.”
