Liverpool have been told Manchester City summer signing Erling Haaland will ‘prove the difference’ in the Premier League title race.
Following City’s 3-1 loss to Liverpool in the Community Shield last week, the youngster’s abilities were in question after missing two perfect scoring chances.
But, despite speculation from fans and even former City star Sergio Aguero, Manchester United cult hero turned DC United manager Wayne Rooney has said he thinks Haaland will be a perfect fit for the Etihad.
“His failures were played out time and time again on social media and there were headlines about his ‘false start’. I saw the game differently,” Rooney wrote in The Times.
“I’ve seen City’s big signing confirm why he’s going to score a lot of goals in England and will, in my opinion, prove the difference in the title race.”
The 22-year-old has often struggled to bond well with his City team-mates in the Community Shield, with Guardiola’s players clearly still adjusting to life with a striker in his own right.
But for Rooney, he saw Haaland’s talent shine through, even though he struggled to click with his new team in the draw.

He added: “In the Champions League and Bundesliga Haaland has already proven his qualities at the highest level and last Saturday against Liverpool he was in the right positions, finding chances, moving smart and looking fast, strong and aggressive. in his race.
“Perhaps the main way City, under Pep Guardiola, score is through low balls played through the penalty area.
“Haaland scored exactly that way on his City debut in a friendly with Bayern Munich and against Liverpool, the two big opportunities he passed up were in central positions from six yards out which he swung into. was moved in attacks where City changed their game.
“If he keeps doing that, goal after goal will come – because there’s no doubting his finishing ability.”
Pep Guardiola’s side had no trouble winning the Premier League last season without a senior centre-forward.
And Rooney has warned City title rivals Liverpool – who narrowly missed beating Pep Guardiola’s side on the final day – that the Norwegian will be the difference maker in the title race this season.
After saying he believes Haaland can win this season’s Golden Boot and score a goal a game, he continued: “He’s one of the main reasons I see City retaining the title.
“Liverpool are an amazing team and can beat anyone in their day, but I just think on the pitch City have better players and they are a better team.
“Having that real goalscorer at No.9 gives City an extra scare factor and makes them a threat from almost anywhere.”
