Erik ten Hag will need support to succeed at Manchester United, warns Jaap Stam

Ten Hag will take over at Old Trafford at the end of the season, ending Ralf Rangnick’s disappointing spell as interim replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Dutchman has enjoyed success as manager of Ajax over the past five years and Stam believes his former club need to be active in the transfer market to ensure Ten Hag is able to imprint his identity on the first team.

“He understands, and he also knows, that the Premier League is totally different – the people, the press, the expectations, the pressure – from what it was in Holland,” Stam told the PA news agency.

“For him it’s going to be a learning curve, but it’s very important that the club and the owners support him in terms of personnel.

“United have good players. Yes, some of them might have to go, but they also have to bring in several other players, so they can get unity within this team, play in a certain way.

“The philosophy of how he wants to play is of course very important. That’s why they chose Erik. Hopefully he can show that.

It has been a difficult season for the majority of United’s players, particularly Harry Maguire who has struggled for form and seen his place both with United and England in question.

Stam believes Maguire is under more scrutiny than other places due to his price tag, and a new coaching staff at the club could prove beneficial for the centre-back.

“I still think Harry is a good player, is a good defender,” Stam said.

“You have to understand, every player – and I’ve had it myself too – goes through tough times he goes through, the confidence is a bit low, he doesn’t feel good, makes mistakes.

“But when you cost 100 million and you make a mistake, yes, the pressure on you is much greater than when you cost a few pounds.

“He has also played some good games this season. Having this season now and maybe a new coach coming in, having a fresh start, (he will learn) a lot from this season as well and what he has done and what he needs to do.

“Does he need to make a change or not? Maybe having different players next to him or in front of him can also help him feel more confident, so maybe next season you’ll see a totally different player.
