Erik ten Hag is plotting to advance Tottenham his first Manchester United signing
According to the Daily Mail, Erik ten Hag is interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur striker Steven Bergwijn once he becomes Manchester United manager.
The Dutchman reportedly tried to sign the winger several times during his time at Ajax, most recently in January 2022. However, the move was blocked by Spurs.
He could finally be able to sign Bergwijn after joining United. According to The Telegraph, a three-year contract has been agreed between ten Hag and United to become the new manager of Old Trafford.
Bergwijn joined Tottenham in January 2020 from PSV Eindhoven and scored on his Premier League debut in a 2-0 win over Manchester City. However, he has since had a checkered career with the Lilywhites.
Previously, Heung-Min Son and Lucas Moura were favored over the winger. The addition of Dejan Kulusevski in January has now pushed the Dutchman even further down the peloton.
He has made 27 appearances this season in all competitions, scoring four goals and providing two assists. In total, he has scored eight goals and provided ten assists in 78 appearances for Spurs.
Manchester United would have to spend over £20m if they want to sign Bergwijn, and his salary is currently £100,000 a week.
Should Manchester United sign Steven Bergwijn from Tottenham Hotspur?
Manchester United could face a lack of attacking options this summer. Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani are set to leave with their contracts expiring.
The future of Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford is still unclear. Anthony Martial, currently on loan at Sevilla, is also expected to leave. Therefore, they need reinforcement in this area.
Although his stats at Tottenham might not favor Bergwijn, the fact that ten Hag is impressed with the winger could be a selling point. Moreover, he has been good for the Netherlands, scoring three goals in two games during the recent international break.
United have often been accused of buying stars and not the players the manager currently needs. Therefore, if ten Hag becomes the manager, he must have the freedom to choose his players.
However, according to the aforementioned source, they might have to compete with clubs in France and Germany for the signing of Bergwijn.
