Erik ten Hag forced failing Manchester United stars into a ‘brutal’ training session on the players’ day off to close the 13.8km running deficit after the 4-0 loss at Brentford

Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag oversaw a ‘brutal’ training session following his side’s 4-0 thrashing at Brentford.

United were blown away within 35 minutes in west London, leaving Ten Hag stunned.

Manchester United trailed 4-0 after 35 minutes against Brentford on Saturday

The result left the Red Devils provisionally bottom of the league after losing their two Premier League games so far on a goal difference of minus five.

Post-match stats showed Brentford completed 13.8 kilometers [8.5 miles] more than United’s failing stars and as a result, according to the Times, Ten Hag ensured his players made up the shortfall by requiring them to cover the equivalent distance in training.

United’s stars were due to have the day off on Sunday, but the severity of Saturday’s loss was such that the Dutchman called up his players for the wild session.

First-half goals from Josh Dasilva, Mathias Jensen, Ben Mee and Bryan Mbuemo gave Thomas Frank’s men a memorable victory as they continued their unbeaten start to the season.

After the match, Ten Hag reinforced the need for new faces at the club ahead of the transfer deadline and explained why he made three half-time substitutions.

He told Sky Sports: “We need new players and quality players. We will try to convince them to join us.

Ten Hag was shocked by his side’s first-half display at Brentford and canceled his player’s day off

“Mistakes are part of football, you have to continue but above all you have to act. [The substitutions] it was a matter of bringing in new ones. I could have changed the other eight too.

For United, the season is going from bad to worse as they sustain the table after just two Premier League outings.

The 20-time league champions are already six points behind neighbors Manchester City with Liverpool’s daunting task at Old Trafford, live on talkSPORT.

A loss to Jurgen Klopp’s side would increase the pressure on Ten Hag while plunging United further into the mud in what was believed to be the dawn of a new era at the club.
