England star Ben Stokes reveals fear after choking on tablet before Ashes: “I feared this was the end”

Stokes, who has just entered the English fold, revealed the scare in his column for the Daily Mirror newspaper.

“Until he came out, I thought this might be the end,” he added. “I was alone in my room and couldn’t breathe as it lodged and started to dissolve. I felt like my mouth was on fire.

“Without going into too much detail, I have never seen so much saliva as on Sunday morning, it was a really scary experience.”

Stokes took an indefinite hiatus from cricket in July to focus on his mental health while recovering from a second operation on a broken finger, and was a late addition to the England squad for the Australia tour.

The 30-year-old said the finger injury was going very well and he was in a good mental position.

However, he had another fear when he took a bullet to his forearm during training, which left him in excruciating pain.

“I couldn’t lift it… I thought it was broken,” Stokes added. Fortunately, the pain and reaction eased once we got back into the locker room and the physiotherapists could be sure it wasn’t much of a break.

“It wasn’t until I got back to my hotel room that I took stock of the day I had spent. The adrenaline had worn off and I was exhausted. Glad to be. here to tell the story, but hoping my pre-test dramas are now over. “
