England leave George Ford and Billy Vunipola out of training squad but Louis Lynagh among eight new orders

eorge Ford and Billy Vunipola are among the senior players absent from an England training squad next week, but Eddie Jones has called up eight uncapped players, including Harlequins starlet Louis Lynagh.

Ford and Vunipola, who both have more than 50 caps, were on rest for the summer’s testing against the United States and Canada, and were not recalled from a 45-man squad.

“We left out some experienced players, but we are really clear that the door is not closed to them and we can’t wait to see them work hard to get back into the race,” said head coach Jones. .

A number of senior players are back after the Lions and a break, however. Owen Farrell, Maro Itoje, Courtney Lawes, Kyle Sinckler, Joe Marler, Jonny May and Ben Youngs are all selected.

Notably, Sam Simmonds – a Lion this summer – receives his first call-up in England since 2018. Lynagh, the 20-year-old son of Wallabies legend Michael, burst onto the scene this year during the Harlequins’ march to the title. Premiership, and scored two tries in the Newcastle defense opener on Sunday.

His selection is important because his parentage means he is eligible for both Italy and Australia, who would no doubt have come to call before long. There are two more Harlequins among the uncapped players in flanker Jack Kenningham and hooker Sam Riley.

Sale duo Bevan Rodd and Raffi Quirke are also intriguing selections in this group. Nine players who made their test debuts this summer are called up, including Marcus Smith, Alex Dombrandt and Leicester full-back Freddie Steward.
