An English fan is seriously injured after falling from a grandstand at Wembley in the Euro 2020 opening win over Croatia.
Shocked fans saw the spectator fall from a grandstand onto the seats and the concrete below shortly after the start of the match.
A spokesperson for Wembley later confirmed the supporter was taken to hospital after being seriously injured.
“We can confirm that a spectator fell from the stands just after the kick-off of the England-Croatia game at Wembley Stadium,” the spokesperson said.
“The spectator received medical treatment on the spot and was then taken to hospital in serious condition.
“We will continue to work with UEFA to ensure the matter is fully investigated and we continue to monitor the situation.”
An English fan told the Evening Standard: “We saw his legs go through the barrier and then he fell and hit the ground and didn’t move.
“It seemed to take years for the staff to reach it. A guy near us who saw it all was crying loudly.
England ran out of deserved winners against Croatia as Raheem Sterling scored a second-half winner to seal Gareth Southgate’s men a Group D victory.
