Dan Lawrence finished undefeated on 67 to help England overcome their slump in the afternoon session

Dan Lawrence hit an unbeaten 67 to bolster England’s total after the hosts threatened to collapse on day one of the second test against New Zealand.

Rory Burns backed his hundred in the first test with an 81 fight before Lawrence, backed by Olly Stone (20) and Mark Wood (16no), helped England recover from 175-6 to close on 258-7 .

New Zealand made six changes to their squad ahead of the World Trials final next week, but, having cleared an opening pit of 72 just after lunch, they dominated the session of the afternoon and Trent Boult struck twice in the early evening to let England falter. .

Lawrence remained steadfast, however, and was supported by the lower order to give the crowd of 18,000 at Edgbaston something to cheer about at the end of the day and give the home side hope to climb to 300 le second day.
