Emma Raducanu wins prestigious Laureus World Sports Award as Robert Lewandowski honored for record-breaking season and Max Verstappen named Best Sportsman


Emma Raducanu, Robert Lewandowski and Max Verstappen were among the winners of the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards 2022.

The 19-year-old British tennis star shocked the world when she won the US Open, without dropping a set, after clearing qualifying.

She also became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam since Virginia Wade in 1977 and Raducanu scooped the Breakthrough of the Year award.

After receiving his prestigious Laureus award at a digital ceremony held in Seville, Raducanu said: “It has been a great year for me.

“Thank you to everyone at Laureus Academy for voting for me. I also want to congratulate all of the other nominees.

British teenage skateboarder Sky Brown has received the Comeback of the Year award after winning a medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

Brown had suffered multiple skull fractures in a training crash in May 2020, but battled to return to the Games and become Britain’s youngest Olympic medalist.

Bayern Munich hero Lewandowski has received the Outstanding Achievement award for breaking Gerd Muller’s Bundesliga goalscoring record.

The striker scored an incredible 41 league goals, in just 29 games, to break the German’s long-standing record.

Elsewhere, Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen and Jamaican sprinter Elaine Thompson-Herah have been named Laureus World Sportsman and World Sportswoman of the Year.

The Italian men’s football team have been voted Team of the Year after beating England in the European Championship final.

Seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady received the Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award.
