EMILY’s List, a political organization that helps raise funds and elect women Democrats who support abortion rights, has chosen former Kamala Harris senior advisor Laphonza Butler as its next president. Butler will be the first woman of color and the first mother to lead the group in its 36-year history.
Butler, the organization’s third president, grew up in Magnolia, Mississippi, and attended Jackson State University, a historically black university.
Prior to joining EMILY’s List, Butler was most recently Director of Public Policy and Campaigns in North America for Airbnb. During the 2020 primary, she was one of the closest senior counselors to the Sen-era. Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign.
She was also president of the 2015 SEIU California Local, helping to lead one of the largest unions in the country.
Butler says his leadership will be to “expand” the base of EMILY’s roster, “from our members and donors to our candidates and voters.”
“We want to make sure that more young women and women of color bring their political commitment to EMILY’s list and help us do what we do best: WIN,” Butler said.
Butler’s leadership on EMILY’s List comes at a time when the battle for abortion rights is in central Texas. A new state law prohibits abortions at six weeks, before most people know they are pregnant.
“As we are currently seeing in Texas, the right of every person to access abortion care, to make their own health care decisions and to vote faces an unprecedented threat,” Butler tweeted Monday.
“The rise of discriminatory voter suppression and abortion ban bills across the country threatens our very democracy,” she said.
