Emily Ratajkowski explained why she recently bought her one-year-old son Sly a doll and a tea set.
During Tuesday’s episode of her “High Low with EmRata” podcast, 31-year-old model and guest Julia Fox opened up about parenting their babies as single moms.
Fox said “it’s hard” because “you just don’t want them to end up like all the guys you’ve met”.
“It’s like, how do you stop this conditioning from happening?” added the 32-year-old ‘Uncut Gems’ star.
EMILY RATAJKOWSKI ON SEXUALITY: “I DON’T REALLY BELIEVE IN STRAIGHT PEOPLE”
“It’s crazy, Sly loves trucks,” Ratajkowski said. “He’s so excited he loves playing with anything that has wheels.
“This morning I ordered a doll and a tea set from him because I was like, ‘You have to balance that.’ But also, is that just what he naturally likes?”
Fox noted that her one-year-old son, Valentino, is “crazy” about trucks, but he “also likes to push a stroller with a little doll in it.” She added that she bought him a pink truck and Ratajkowski added that Sly also had a pink convertible.
“Are these the little ways you can start to help make sure conditioning doesn’t happen?” asked the founder of Inamorata. “And also spend a lot of time with women?
Ratajkowski explained that it made her “so sad” to think of “someone trying to toughen them up.”
“And that’s where patriarchy hurts men,” Fox agreed. “Because I feel like men really are those repressed individuals.”
Fox shares Valentino with ex-husband Peter Artemiev. The former dominatrix married the private pilot in 2018, but the couple separated in 2020. The two welcomed their son in January 2021, six months after finalizing their divorce. During her chat with Ratajkowski, Fox explained that they co-parent Valentino, but she has primary custody.
Ratajkowski shares Sly with ex-husband Sebastian Bear-McLard. The couple tied the knot in 2018 after just a few weeks of dating, and she gave birth to Sly in March 2021. The ‘I Feel Pretty’ star split from the ‘Uncut Gems’ producer in July amid cheating allegations and filed for divorce in September.
Before hosting Sly, Ratajkowski wrote an essay for Vogue in which she explained that she and Bear-McLard had told their friends that they “wouldn’t know the [baby’s] sex until our child is 18 and they will let us know then.”
She elaborated on their shared belief that gender is “more complex than the genitals our child might be born with” and noted that “whatever genitals our child might be born with, the truth that we ultimately only have no idea who– rather than What – grows in my belly.”

“I like the idea of imposing as few gender stereotypes on my child as possible,” Ratajkowski added.
After giving birth, Ratajkowski shared a photo of her newborn baby with the caption, “Gorgeous boy.” The post sparked confusion and backlash from fans who wondered why she appeared to confirm Sly’s gender following her comments in her Vogue article. In response, the actress said her critics should read her essay to fully understand her thoughts on gender.

In November 2021, Ratajkowski told Interview magazine, “Babies have this genderless quality to them, and so I love giving him that right now.”
“I just treated him like this wonderful little human being introduced to the world.”
