“We have an upcoming aero upgrade package on the car for this Grand Prix,” said executive director Marcin Budkowski.

“In addition, we have a few test items to evaluate in practice on Friday, which will help define further improvements planned for the next few races.”

Budkowski admitted that the season opener “confirmed some of the weaknesses in our package” and that they are working hard to “earn the few tenths of a second we are currently missing to fight in front of the midfielder”.

With McLaren, Ferrari and AlphaTauri appearing as the fastest midfield teams in 2021 so far, Alpine already has ground to catch up after the team’s first scoreless start in four seasons.

Alonso admitted: “I think we have to fight to score our first points of the season on Sunday.

“Hopefully all of our bad luck this season has been exhausted in Bahrain!

“We’re still learning a lot about the car and I expect the setup here and of course the weather to be very different from what we’ve experienced in Bahrain. It should be pretty close and a few tenths of a second could make up a number of posts. “
