Elon Musk recently moved from California to Texas. You might think that the second richest person in the world, like many Silicon Valley emigrants who sell their insanely expensive homes and move to Texas, buy a mansion in Austin, the site of a massive new Tesla factory.
You would be wrong, according to Elon Musk.
Musk has sold or is selling at least seven of his Los Angeles mansions, but he revealed earlier this month he didn’t sell his “bay area events house” and his “main house is literally a house around $ 50,000 in Boca Chica / Starbase that I rent to SpaceX,” his rocket company .
This $ 50,000 house, the Houston Chronicle reported Monday night, is “almost a literal box,” a 20-foot-by-20-foot “foldable prefabricated house” from housing startup Boxabl. Boxabl dropped a major clue in November, saying he had built a “Boxabl Casita” for a “high profile” and “top secret” customer in Boca Chica, the coastal hamlet that Musk’s SpaceX is taking over.
The Boxabl Casita is essentially a studio, and it is certainly large enough to comfortably accommodate one person, even if that person could comfortably afford whatever real estate they wanted. But Musk has a one-year-old son, X Æ A-Xii, with his girlfriend Grimes, and the box would likely be a bit cozy for the three of them.
Grimes said in march that she lives in Austin and that she probably doesn’t live in a 20×20 box. Maybe the casita is more like a beach cabin.
