Elon Musk unveils the Tesla Model S Plaid – TechCrunch

Tesla finally hosted the long-awaited and once reprogrammed “delivery event” for its lightning-fast Model S Plaid at its factory in Fremont, California. The electric vehicle company will start with 25 deliveries on Friday night, growing to several hundred cars per week and 1,000 cars per week in the next quarter, CEO Elon Musk said at the event.

There weren’t any huge surprises with the latest iteration of the S Model, which features a new battery pack design, improved heat pump, carbon-coated rotors on the engines, and a new record-breaking coefficient of drag of 0.208, a number Musk pointed out. like maybe a boost to Lucid Motors. The Lucid Air, which is slated to go into production later this year, has a drag coefficient of 0.21.

While wielding a hammer in preparation for “breaking some records,” Tesla Model S designer Franz von Holzhausen kicked off the event, introducing Musk himself, who drove a Model. Shiny black s around the test track, sliding straight onto stage to the smooth sound of dubstep.

“It’s been nine years since we delivered the first Model S, the first car produced here at Fremont, so almost a decade, and I think we’ve really taken it to a whole new level with Plaid,” said Musk to an audience of adoring fans. “Some of you may know that our product plan is being stolen from Space balls, we went at Plaid speed. So … why make this car really fast, it’s insanely fast and all, and I think there’s something that’s quite important for the future of sustainable energy, is that we have to show that an electric car is the best car, hands down. Must be clear, like, man, sustainable energy cars can be the fastest cars, can be the safest cars, can be the coolest cars in every way.

The four-door electric sedan goes from 0 to 60 in 1.99 seconds, which Musk says breaks the two-second barrier that no production car has ever been able to get through. It produces 1,020 horsepower, has a top speed of 200 miles per hour (with the proper tires) and can travel a quarter mile in 9.23 seconds, according to Musk and the company’s website. The battery can go 390 miles on a single charge, but Musk added that the car can go 412 miles with the dual-engine setup (the S Plaid model has a three-engine setup). The improved charging speed gives drivers a range of 187 miles in just 15 minutes.

The new Model S also has a new battery, but Musk hasn’t elaborated beyond that detail. He spent a considerable amount of time describing the engine’s carbon sleeve rotors, which Musk says is a first for a production electric motor due to the difficulty of removing it. The end result is an engine that goes up to 20,000 rpm.

The new heat pump that powers Plaid’s HVAC system has a 30% higher cold temperature range and requires 50% less energy for cabin heating and freezing conditions, which means little degradation in cold weather , Musk said.

The Model S’s interior also features a number of updates, some of which have already been revealed, including a fork-mounted steering wheel – which raised eyebrows and caught the attention of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration – a Panoramic main screen and ventilated front seats. . The GPU is apparently at the level of a PlayStation 5. (TechCrunch noticed that someone was playing Cyberpunk 2077 from CD Projekt Red in the vehicle at some point in the event).

The car’s software is designed to learn from driver behavior, adapting to the driver’s needs so that if, for example, you tend to walk out of your driveway in a certain way, the car will geocode there. and ultimately does this action for you via the autopilot system.

“It’s just going to continue to minimize the amount of input you have to make until the car reads your mind,” Musk said.

The first shipments of the vehicle, which start at $ 129,990, come the same week Musk officially announced plans to cancel production of the Model S Plaid +, which was supposed to be a faster version of the Plaid version of the Model S. Tesla stopped taking orders for the vehicle on its website in May, suggesting that the Plaid + was not on the table.

“The Model S is going up to Plaid gear this week,” Musk tweeted on Sunday. “Plaid + is canceled. No need, because the Plaid speed is so good.

Musk described his conduct as tantamount to powering a spaceship in a Tweeter because of the indescribable “limbic resonance” whatever that means.
