Twitter Blue — on, off, on, off again and now…on again?

The controversial “pay for the blue tick” service got off to a rocky start on Monday, with several imitators and parody accounts going wild on Twitter. This led to some reports that the microblogging giant – now owned by eccentric billionaire Elon Musk – had suspended the service, news later confirmed by Reuters.

However, Twitter’s new owner hinted on Sunday that Twitter Blue could be back next week. He tweeted this in response to a user query.

To say that confusion surrounds the exact implementation of Twitter Blue is an understatement – for starters, it was suggested that while anyone will be able to “buy” the coveted blue tick, those who are actually verified – celebrities, influencers , journalists, politicians, government officials, etc. – will have an additional gray “official” label under their name.

This option soon disappeared and now appears to have been reinstated for some accounts.

This begs the question – why would someone buy a blue tick for $7.99 – Rs 719 per month in India – when verified accounts will wear this official badge? How is this different from Musk’s dismissive “lords and peasants” characterization of the existing verification system? Only Elon knows.

As for India, the service will be provided to users at Rs 719 per month, although there have been a plethora of confusing subscription options, at least on the App Store.

On the Android Play Store, the in-app purchase option was even weirder, as you can see below.

It is not immediately clear which “item” is worth Rs 26,000 and the frequency of this payment.

As Kanishka Sarkar of CNBC-TV18.com notes – citing Twitter manager Esther Crawford – the new Twitter Blue does not include identity verification. “This is an opt-in paid subscription that offers a blue tick and access to certain features.”

In Elon Musk’s own words, Twitter will do a lot of stupid things before it gets it right. So hang in there.

As the popular Chinese saying goes, “May you live in interesting times”.

Indeed we are. Indeed… we are.
