Elements of the Civil Guard of the Michoacán Public Security Secretariat were assigned to the mayor of Cotija, Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa, who was kidnapped by an armed commando on September 23 in the municipality of Zapopan, Jalisco.

The state Secretary of Public Security, José Alfredo Ortega Reyes, appointed Civil Guard personnel this October 7 to guarantee the safety of the mayor and increase security in the municipality of Cotija.

The head of SSP, José Alfredo Ortega Reyes, went to the municipality to present the Civil Guard personnel to the mayor and provide operational and security support to the municipal president on a permanent basis.

“I am committed to maintaining the integrity of the people, therefore, today I met with the councilor Yolanda Sánchez, to whom I appointed agents of our Civil Guard, who will be in charge of their safety,” reiterated the Secretary of Public Security .

According to the state Secretariat of Public Security, in Cotija there is coordination between the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) and the National Guard (GN), which join the security strategy to maintain strict surveillance.

On September 24, the Jalisco Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the mayor of Cotija was deprived of her liberty the day before around seven at night in the municipality of Zapopan.

According to Jalisco authorities, Sánchez Figueroa left a shopping plaza in the Jardines de la Patria neighborhood accompanied by two women, then boarded a rental vehicle and headed to her destination, which was not specified.

However, on the way, a command of armed individuals intercepted the vehicle where the official and her companions were traveling to take the mayor away.

The mayor was reported missing, so an investigation file was opened. At the time, some versions indicated that the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) could be related to the kidnapping of the official because it has a presence in the municipality of Cotija.

In addition, there was supposedly a threat from the structure of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias El Mencho, to the mayor that occurred in April 2023.

Three days after her kidnapping was reported, Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa was released alive in the municipality of Villamar, Michoacán.

According to official information, the mayor of Cotija was the one who alerted her municipal Public Security Secretary about her release through a phone call.

Due to these events, the Jalisco Prosecutor’s Office arrested three people for their alleged responsibility in the illegal deprivation of liberty, who were identified as Raúl “A”, Adrián “A” and Miguel Ángel “D”, who were already linked to process.
