DETROIT – Seniors stranded in building with only one elevator that hasn’t worked for weeks contacted help me hank.
Some have resorted to purchasing Life Alert devices because they are concerned about the physical impact walking on stairs has on their health.
Cynthia Gardner struggles to climb stairs. She said the elevator in her apartment building Boston West Boulevard in Detroit has been out for almost a month. It is the only elevator in the building.
She invested in a life alert device because she is worried about her health. She said the strain of walking up the stairs was taking its toll.
“My heart is beating out of control and I already have asthma. It’s just a problem,” Gardner said.
Local 4 contacted the building manager on site, but received no response. Hank Winchester of Local 4 then went to 1st City LLC, which manages the building. No one in the office would speak and was told the boss was on a plane.
Hank Winchester got the City of Detroit implied. An inspector is currently investigating and pressuring the management company to resolve the issue.
“In this case, we have the promise that he will be taken care of before the end of the week. They should receive the materials needed to do the repair and by the end of the week if it’s not done. We will issue tickets. Hundreds of dollars,” said Glenn Davis of the City of Detroit Building Safety Department.
As of March 31, 2022, the elevator has been repaired. Hank Winchester’s report is available below:
